Last month I reviewed The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron, in
an attempt to encourage women to find their creative self,
to explore their true calling.
If you happen to find your passion, the best of both
worlds would be the ability to bring your passion to the marketplace.
I believe there are many talented people in this world who
have no idea how to introduce their ideas, their services
or their products. Your latest manuscript or entrepreneurial
idea will not be heard of unless you take the time to learn
how to promote.
Which
brings me to this month’s selection, 101 Ways To Promote Yourself;
Avon, $5.99). Having worked in the field of public relations
for 12 years, I wholeheartedly recommend this book to you.
Its simple list format makes it an easy read. Its strength
lies in the fact that you can peruse each topic at your leisure
and out of order. If you want to learn about how to be a guest
on TV and radio talk shows, skip to point 94. If you are in
the process of developing your own mailing list, check out
point 12. Need to know more about networking, sponsoring an
event, writing articles, response marketing, selling on the
internet, don’t worry…it’s all there.
Written
by Raleigh Pinskey, a public relations guru, this book is
packed with tips, as well as her “million dollar media rolodex.”
For years, I have referred to her guide for fresh tips and
moral support. It has become a treasured companion.
I
am not suggesting that every person can be made into a public
relations success overnight. Otherwise, why would we need
the professionals? However, if you are in the midst of a project
and want to launch your message into the world, then this
book is a great place to start. At best you will learn some
tips that you can use yourself or, at least, you will come
to understand that public relations is an art and a craft.
And you will be better informed when you are in the position
to hire someone to get your name out there. Remember, it’s
not who you know, but who knows you.
Ms.
Pinskey concludes her book with some words of wisdom; she
calls it her “Success System to Unlock the Door.” I will give you her top three tips:
1)
Believe in yourself
2)
Believe in success
3)
Believe that you can and deserve to be successful
If
you bought this book or any other of the previously recommended
ones, I would love to hear your feedback. Also, I welcome suggestions for future book reviews. If you
have a book that you would like to promote, contact me via
my e-mail address. Here
is your opportunity to get your name out there.
To
learn more about how you can increase your visibility in your
profession, please consider taking my two hour course to be
held at Hofstra University College of Continuing Education
on August 13 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. For more information,

well, it is. Afterall, I read Pinskey’s book.)
