COMPANIES
SUCCESSFULLY GET ON BOARD
WITH WOMEN ON THE JOB
By
Dana Friedman

Over 300
corporate representatives attended the second annual Get On
Board luncheon sponsored by Women on the Job, a nonprofit
organization promoting women's issues in the workplace, through
its Where Are the Women? project. The luncheon recognized
14 companies that currently have a woman on their board of
directors. The Honorary Chair for this event was Robert B.
Catell, Chairman and CEO of KeySpan, one of the honored companies
noted for having had three women on its board of directors.
John Komenicki, Editor and Publisher of Long Island Business
News was the Master of Ceremonies and he complimented the
audience for the active presence of men in the room. The keynote
speaker was Kay Koplovitz, Founder of USA Networks and the
author of a new book called Bold Women, Big Ideas, which was
distributed to all attendees. She provided both inspirational
stories for the women in the room and a compelling business
case for executives to understand that as the people making
80% of the purchasing decisions in this country, women should
be at the table to help drive corporate success.
Women
on the Job board member Kathy Adams, who also chairs the Where
Are the Women? project, explained how the Get On Board luncheon
is one piece of a larger campaign to increase the presence
of women on corporate boards. Ms. Adams announced a new shareholder
campaign where stickers will be placed on proxy votes asking
Where Are the Women?, along with a breakfast seminar series,
training for board-ready women, and research on the process
of board development.
Sponsors
of this event included Fleet Bank, KeySpan, North Fork Bank,
Citibank, Networking, and Long Island Commercial Bank. The
honored companies with women on their boards included Arrow
Electronics, Inc., Audiovox Corp., Cablevision Systems Corp.,
Computer Associates, Delta Financial Corp., Gentiva Health,
Henry Schein, Inc., KeySpan, Long Island Commercial Bank,
Pall Corp., Roslyn Bancorp Inc., State Bancorp, Inc., and
TII Network Technologies, Inc.
