Dear Pay Equity Advocate:

The New York State Pay Equity Coalition (NYSPEC) invites your participation in a growing effort to achieve passage of pay equity legislation in New York State. The Coalition was formed in 2000 through the initiative of the Women on the Job Task Force, a Long Island-based coalition of approximately 60 diverse organizations. The Coalition's work and influence will be strengthened by the inclusion of a group such as yours in this advocacy effort. As you can see, Coalition members include regional and state affiliated organizations.

At the time of its formation, NYSPEC directed its education and advocacy efforts to getting four bills passed by the State Senate that were repeatedly passed by State Assembly. This year, the Coalition added a fifth bill, the New York Fair Pay Act to its Pay Equity Package, to address race as well as gender discrimination.
*See attached list for bills in the Pay Equity Package

We know, historically, that jobs held predominantly by female and/or minority workers, such as clericals, nurses aides, food service workers, and child care workers, still offer significantly lower pay than jobs of comparable skills, effort and responsibilities which are not sex and/or race segregated. Passage of the five bills included in the NYSPEC Pay Equity Package will establish the principle of equal pay for work of equal value in collective bargaining and improve the process through which aggrieved workers seek remedies for wage discrimination.

We look forward to working together on this project. Please contact us (by e-mail: wojtf@optonline.net or by phone: 516-883-1691) with your questions or to send us the names of individuals who would represent your organization and participate in the Coalition. As soon as you agree to join, we would be pleased to list your organization on the NYSPEC letterhead. That will inform New York voters, workers and lawmakers that you are part of an important coalition of organizations working together to achieve pay equity for all women, minority workers and their families in New York State.
