FEATURING: Lyn
Dobrin
It was so exciting for me to interview Lyn Dobrin. She has
accomplished so much and contributed to numerous organizations
and humanitarian-related events. Lyn is very bright, grounded,
interesting and warm. Working two separate home-based businesses
that overlap each other, Lyn balances her public relations
consulting, focusing on the not-for-profit world with her
writing for food, travel and garden magazines. Lyn works with
organizations such as Adelphi New York State Breast Cancer
Hotline and Support Program, Choice Magazine Listening, and
Free Talking Magazine for blind and disabled people. She writes
for several publications including: AAA Car and Travel; Distinction
Magazine; Business Long Island; People, Places and Plants;
Simply the Best; and www.honeymoons.about.com.

Do you live by a basic philosophy?
I am an ethical humanist. My religion is to live by my ethical
standards of behavior and try to live respectfully in the
world. Are there people that were catalysts in your life?
Aunt Sara who gave me a loving support on which to build my
life. Nat Goldstein who was funny, uninhibited, and zany;
he taught me how to have fun and make people laugh.
Arthur, my husband who I have been married to for forty-two
years; he is a great person and we share the same values.
Lastly, Wangari Mathai, the Nobel Peace Prize winner from
Kenya. She is independent, strong and guided by a belief in
humanity and a desire to make the world better.

Do you volunteer your time to worthy causes?
Yes. There are too many to mention, but there are two that
I will share with you. There is the Kenya Project. We are
supporting an elementary school that is run by friends in
Kenya and is helped financially by sponsors and friends in
the United States. I have been back to Kenya twelve times
since 1965, when I was in the Peace Corps. Additionally, I
am co-leader of Amnesty International Group.

What is the best way to put your talents to good use?
Train people in non-profit to do public relations.

What have you found rewarding in your life and career?
Integrating my activist temperament into my business and
personal life.
Also, the people I have met and learned from. I meet a great
deal of people in all different endeavors.… a lot of
creative people. I love getting ideas from them.
Lastly, but most importantly, I find it tremendously rewarding
being with my three grandchildren. I know how precious they
are at each stage in their development and appreciate where
they are at the moment.

Do you have advice for women readers?
Don’t be afraid. Get a mentor. …someone who you
can trust with your ideas and that you can trust their judgment.
Also, you are going to make mistakes so acknowledge them and
get on with it. Be awake.

What do you do for fun?
I eat, read, dance, and garden. I spend time with my family.
I am living the life I have chosen. There is seamlessness
about it.
