FEATURING:
Marie O’Mara

Our February LIWomen.com Long Island Businesswoman who has
made a difference is Marie O’Mara, Marketing Director
for the accounting firm of Getzel Schiff & Ross located
in Woodbury. Marie is responsible for business development,
public relations, seminars and event planning. Her vivacious,
upbeat personality, previous experience as a wedding planner
and maitre d’ of Caesar’s Palace, as well as some
well-received stand-up comedy experience provides her with
a strong relationship-building foundation and the ability
to communicate and embrace all those who cross her path.

Marie, do you live by a basic philosophy?
I have a few: Live everyday like it’s your last. And,
I believe that you should treat people how you want to be
treated. Finally, pay it forward. This means doing as many
great things as you can for others without consideration of
reciprocity. The inner satisfaction you get is greater that
any return on the investment.

Are there people that were catalysts in your life?
Both my father and mother have an unbelievable work ethic.
My dad never called in sick and worked like it was his first
day on the job everyday. My mother worked very hard cleaning
homes and this had a great impact on me. Michele Rini, my
first boss at Caesar’s Palace was a strong influence.
As a new cocktail waitress, I spilled a tray of drinks on
her. As a result of the way I handled the situation, I was
promoted to Assistant Manager! Additionally, my godmother,
Pat Simmons who is Director of Decision Support at Community
Medical Center in Tom’s River, NJ encouraged me to do
well in school and strive for success.

Do you volunteer your time to worthy causes?
I am secretary of the American Business Women’s Association
(ABWA). Each year we raise money for scholarships for women
from the Coalition Against Domestic Violence. As a member
of the JFK Rotary Club, we put together events to raise money
for children in-need. I am on the Board of the Steve Kaplan
Foundation, which raises money for various children’s
charities. Lastly, I am the founder of Stolio Girls. We raise
money for families in-need and handicapped children, striving
to positively change their lives. We bring women together
to remind them how to be women and how to enjoy themselves.

Do you have advice for women readers?
Don’t forget where you came from. No matter how busy
you get, never forget your family and friends. And, one person
can make a difference in this world. It’s truly amazing
how simple it is to positively impact someone’s life.
