Putt-ing Families First" Tee-ed Off for Annual Event

Benefit Golf Outing to be Held June 4, 2001

Manhasset, NY, April 24, 2001 ? Putt-ing Families First, a fundraising coalition to benefit three local not-for-profit agencies including the Middle Country Library Foundation Family Place, the National Association of Mothers’ Centers, and the Parent-Child Home Program, has raised more than $85,000 in corporate sponsorships to date. The group’s annual golf outing, which will be held June 4, 2001 at St. George’s Golf and Country Club in Stony Brook, is expected to raise in excess of $120,000.

"Putt-ing Families First joins forces each year to raise money and awareness for family support organizations throughout Long Island," said Karen Lutz, co-chair of Putt-ing Families First and executive vice-president of branch banking at EAB. "These not-for-profit organizations play a critical role in the development and growth of young children and offer much-needed support to struggling families. This annual event gives us a forum to support such organizations and honor local individuals and their families for their commitment to family life and charitable organizations."

This year’s Putt-ing Families First honorees are Joseph and John Mincone of Mincone & Mincone PC and Darrell Reed, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of EDO Corporation. The honorees are known for their generous humanitarian and philanthropic efforts on behalf of many Long Island not-for-profits, including the Developmental Disabilities Institute, the Guide Dog Foundation, Juvenile Diabetes Association, Make-A-Wish Foundation, National Cancer Research Foundation, the United Way of Long Island, Victory Housing Development Fund Company, among others.

Local corporations and business have already pledged their support for this year’s event. Tournament sponsors donating $10,000 are Computer Associates, Nortel Networks and the Rauch Foundation. Local corporations that have pledged $5,000 to the campaign include EAB, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Lehr Construction, Nastasi Associates, Fleet, EDO, Mincone & Mincone PC, and Forrest Electric. Those that pledging $3,500 include VVA, Inc., King Kullen, Mellon Bank and JP Morgan. All money raised will be equally donated to the three non-profit parent organizations, benefiting Long Island families in need.

Expanding the traditional role of children’s services, the Family Place project, a program of the Middle Country Library Foundation, supports the idea that libraries can serve as centers for early childhood information, parent education, emergent literacy, socialization, and family support. Modeled after a 20-year-old program at Middle Country Public Library, Family Place promotes the Library’s role in helping parents to prepare their children for reading and school success.

Supporting mothers and families through peer discussion and a non-judgmental exchange of information, the National Association of Mothers’ Center (NAMC) has been helping moms on the Island and across the country, develop local family support and resource centers in their communities for more than 25 years. Mothers’ Centers start our future generations off on the right track.

The Parent-Child Home Program (PCHP) is an innovative, home-based literacy and parenting program enabling families challenged by poverty, limited educational opportunities and language barriers to prepare their two- and three-year-old children to succeed in school. Literacy skills and school success are rooted in early exposure to language through conversation and reading. By increasing verbal interaction between parents and children, the Parent-Child Home Program prepares children to enter school ready to succeed. Founded on Long Island 30 years ago and replicated nationally and internationally, PCHP has a proven track record.
