SALLY RIDE, THE FIRST AMERICAN WOMAN IN SPACE, TO BE KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT L.I.W.A.’S FIRST ANNUAL AWARDS LUNCHEON & CONFERENCE DAY

LIWA (Long Island Women’s Agenda) announces its First Annual Luncheon and Conference Day, scheduled for Monday, June 11, 2001 at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.  The keynote speaker will be Sally Ride, the first American woman in space.

This is a not-to-miss event featuring prominent women on both the local and national scenes.  "Sally Ride has a certain appeal that goes across all ages and genders," says Erica Garay, president of LIWA, founded three years ago as an umbrella organization for the Island’s diverse women’s groups.  "I think everyone thinks it’s exciting to be an astronaut."

The Conference Day encompasses many of the issues about which LIWA’s member organizations are passionate.  Conference registration begins at 7:45am, followed by breakfast and the first of the day’s proceedings, Your Environment:  Exposures and Remedies, a discussion led by Dr. Ruth Allen, Program Director of the Long Island Breast Cancer Study, and Dr. Sandra Steingraber, author of  "Living Downstream:  An Ecologist Looks at Cancer and the Environment."  A choice of workshops will run from 10am until 11:30am, with topics including women and heart disease, working mothers’ issues, how to sell your ideas to legislators, and financial empowerment of women.

The focal point of the day is LIWA’s First Awards Luncheon, with keynote speaker Sally Ride.  Awards will be presented to Jane S. Gitlin, LIWA’s Advocate of the Year, and The National Association of Mothers’ Centers, LIWA’s Organization of the Year.  Rabbi Janet Liss will deliver the luncheon invocation.  Closing out the day will be a provocative panel discussion.

Underwriters of the Conference are Citibank, EAB, JPMorgan Chase, North Fork Bank and Rivkin, Radler & Kremer, LLP.  Sponsorships are still available.

LIWA members and non-members have three registration alternatives: breakfast and workshop only; awards luncheon and panel discussions; or the full schedule of events.  For additional information on registration, sponsorships and membership, visit LIWA’s website at www.liwa.org or contact LIWA at (516) 937-6113.

The Long Island Women’s Agenda is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt, nonpartisan coalition of diverse women’s organizations and individuals. Since its establishment in 1998, LIWA has held their Inaugural Luncheon featuring First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, keynote speaker, in April 1999.  They hosted a Summer Showcasing Expo in June 2000 highlighting their 50 organizational members, created Position Papers on many issues, including domestic violence, affordable housing and pay equity, and have sponsored Women’s Art in the Town Halls of Long Island in April 2000. LIWA hosted a Candidates 2000 Forum for U.S. Congressional candidates in October 2000 and have compiled an annual directory of all women’s organizations on Long Island, distributing them free of charge to all media, libraries, elected officials and LIWA members.  They also inaugurated a quarterly newsletter, distributing them to their members and elected officials, which include a calendar of events for all member organizations.
