LONG  ISLAND  MIDWIVES  WALKING  “MILES FOR MOMS”

FIRST WALKATHON IN NATION SUPPORTING POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION

Long Island Midwives are hosting the First Annual “Miles for Moms” Walk at Sunken Meadow State Park on Oct.13th, as part of our week long celebration of  National Nurse Midwifery Week. Nurse Midwives and Certified Midwives along with families and friends, childbirth educators, doulas and others concerned with women’s health issues will walk the boardwalk to raise awareness and donations for the non-profit ‘Postpartum  Resource Center of New York, Inc.’ based in West Islip, Long Island. This is the first time in our nation that a walk to benefit an organization specifically working on behalf of postpartum depression is being held.

Postpartum Depression in recent months has become front page news. With the tragic events in Texas this past spring, Postpartum Resource Center’s
Executive Co-Director and current Board President of Postpartum Support International Sonia Murdock says, “ It’s more important than ever to educate women and health care providers about the signs of Postpartum Depression and what steps can be taken to avoid it’s tragic consequences.”

As midwives, we bring our expertise to work one on one with women and their families during childbirth and the postpartum experience.  We see first hand the importance of education and what supportive care and communication does during the transition to motherhood. We’re hoping our walk for moms will not only raise awareness of the serious issue of Postpartum Depression, but also draw attention to the fact that midwives actively care about women’s health.

Pre-Registration will begin at 8:30am, Parking Lot One’s Breezeway Entrance / West side. Our walk will start at 9:30am and all are welcome. Participants who raise donations of $50 dollars or more will receive a free commemorative T-shirt and other goodies.  Following the walk, all participants are invited to enjoy our family-style picnic provided by Long Island Midwives. At that time we will make the donation presentation to Postpartum Resource Center’s Executive Co-Directors, Sonia Murdock and Emily Sampino.
