Long Island Law Firm Gives All Employees A Bonus And Makes Them Promise to Shop

September 21, 2001-Looking for ways to encourage his employees, in the aftermath of this American tragedy, Managing Partner Bernard Hyman made a deal with all of his 150 employees at the Long Island law firm of Certilman Balin Adler & Hyman, LLP.  On September 21, he gave them a $100 bonus and made them promise to spend it, on something extra, within a week.

Mr. Hyman told his employees, "Remember always that it was not only the goal of terrorists to make us afraid to live our lives in the open free way of our great democracy, but also to shut down the most prosperous nation on earth." He said, "We must continue to live our lives normally and without fear. Go to the movies, go out to dinner, buy some new clothes or get the kids a great new toy. I believe it is our duty."

Mr. Hyman encourages other employers to do the same. "This is a small way that each business leader can support our economy," said Mr. Hyman. "If every employer gave each of their employees spending money to go shopping, we will send a powerful message that we are still in business. We
want our employees in the stores this week so their neighbors will keep their jobs."

"America has lost too many lives. We have suffered enough. We don't need Americans losing their jobs, too," he said.
