LONG ISLAND CHAPTER HONORS WOMEN-OWNED and SUPPORTERS OF
WOMEN-OWNED FIRMS
Organization to Present $5,000 Education Grant
GREAT NECK, NY (September 28, 2001) -- The National
Association of Women Business Owners Long Island Chapter (NAWBO/LI)
will honor local business women, supporters of women-owned
firms and for the first time will present a $5,000 grant
to a woman-owned firm at its 9TH Annual NAWBO Gala on
Wednesday, November 28, 2001. The event will be held at
the Crest Hollow Country Club, Jericho Turnpike in
Woodbury, New York.
According to NAWBO President, Thea Linker, Michele Cooper
of the Multimold Corporation in Deer Park, will receive
the NAWBO award for Outstanding Woman Business Owner.
"This Award is presented to women who own and operate
businesses with gross sales or revenues in excess of $5
million," Linker said.
Sharon Newman, President of Action Envelope in
Farmingdale, was selected as the Presidents' Award
recipient. Newman has been an active member of NAWBO since
joining and has served on the board in various positions
including Public Affairs and Secretary and is currently
President-Elect.
The
Long Island Development Corporation, of
Plainview,
was selected to receive the Corporation of the Year Award
for its continued support of women-owned businesses,
providing both money and technical assistance to enhance
the growth of women-owned and other small businesses.
Brookhaven Laboratory was selected to receive the
Organization of the Year award for its initiatives on
behalf of women-owned, minority and small disadvantaged
businesses.
This year, NAWBO honors one of its own: Lilo Leeds, of the
Institute for Student Achievement, with the first ever
Community Service Award. Leeds is dedicated to helping at
risk students complete middle and high school and go on to
college.
Fleet Bank of Melville was selected to receive NAWBO's
first Financial Institution award for its initiatives
focused on women business owners and their financial
support of NAWBO Long Island. Fleet Bank created the Women
Entrepreneurs' Connection to provide programs and support
of women business owners.
NAWBO's education committee will also present a $5,000
grant to a woman-owned company in business between five
and seven years.
"NAWBO award winners are leaders in their field of
business, in their communities, and exhibit the qualities
of success that make them outstanding role models for
other women business owners," Linker said.
"The NAWBO Gala is an opportunity for all members of the
Long Island business community, both women and men, to
show support and appreciation of women who by their own
success have made significant contributions to all women
business owners," said Gala Chairperson Sharon Campbell.
"We welcome sponsors for the event."
Founded and chartered in 1986, NAWBO/LI helps women
business owners achieve economic success, shape public
policy and change the business culture. NAWBO/LI is an
active part of a prestigious and powerful national
organization and many NAWBO/LI members become key players
on the national level, including the Presidency. In
principle and in practice, the National Association of
Women Business Owners (NAWBO) values and seeks a diverse

The event begins with cocktails at 6 p.m. followed by
