LONG ISLAND WORKS COALITION TEACHES BUSINESSES THE NUTS AND BOLTS  OF RUNNING AN INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Melville, NY - The Long Island Works Coalition and SUNY Stony Brook are hosting Internships 102: A Nuts and Bolts Approach to Running an Internship Program. This breakfast seminar will teach our local employers step-by-step practical methods for utilizing their most valuable workforce resource, Long Island students.   Internships 102 will take place on November 14th, at the Huntington Hilton, in Melville, from 8: 00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.  Businesses may attend for $50 per person.

The Long Island Works Coalition, a non-profit organization dedicated to bridging the gap between business and education, and SUNY Stony Brook, designed Internships 102 to provide business with the real-world knowledge necessary to run a successful internship program.   "An internship program is an invaluable tool for reducing training and recruitment costs. They offer businesses an ongoing flow of fresh new ideas and enthusiasm, and the opportunity to help shape the skill development of their future employees," said Lisa Strahs-Lorenc, director of community relations, LI Works.

The seminar will start by discussing the key points and challenges of running an internship program, as well as benefits to businesses. Participants will then break into groups by business size for presentations that focus on their specific needs, benefits and challenges.   The event will cover hands-on methods for getting started, liability and Department of Labor regulations, common obstacles and their solutions, and projects and tasks for interns.  The benefits for small medium and large businesses will also be outlined.

L I Works programs and services help prepare students with the knowledge, skills and experience to be successful in the workforce and to increase awareness of the educational and career opportunities that exist here on Long Island.  Some of LI Works other programs include: the bi-annual Internship Connection Fair, a free regional electronic internship clearinghouse at www.liworks.org/interns, the Workforce Summit, parent presentations, business advisory boards, and a speakers' bureau.  In addition, the Long Island Works Coalition is constantly looking for ways to meet the current needs of our community.   For more information call the Long Island Works Coalition at  631-755-0700.
