To Be Honored at Madonna Heights
15th Annual Shepherd’s Ball, November 9, 2001
The Reverend Monsignor Thomas J. Hartman, better known by
millions of Americans as “Father Tom,” co-star of the
popular television show God Squad, will be honored for his
years of service to the Long Island community by Madonna
Heights Services at the Dix Hills charity’s 15th annual
Shepherd’s Ball. The event will take place on Friday
evening, November 9, at the Crest Hollow Country Club in
Woodbury. The gala evening that will include cocktails,
dinner and dancing.
Madonna Heights provides residential, community, mental
health and outreach services to needy adolescent girls,
women and families on Long Island. It is a division of St.
Christopher-Ottilie Services for Children and Families.
A four-time Emmy Award winner, and Telly Award honoree,
Father Tom is one of the most highly recognized television
and radio personalities in broadcasting today. In addition
to hosting their God Squad show, Father Tom and his
co-host Rabbi Marc Gellman are frequent guests on MSNBC’s
Brian Williams Show, Court TV with Catherine Crier, and
Fox Cable News. Father Tom is also a contributor to ABC’s
Good Morning America and the nationally syndicated Imus in
the Morning radio program. Father Tom’s national radio
show Journeys Through Rock, on the ABC Radio Network is
heard by millions of Americans around the nation. On Long
Island’s Cablevision Channel 25, his productions,
including the show, Father Tom and Friends, air on
Telecare, the television center for the Diocese of
Rockville Centre).
The prolific broadcaster has also authored several
acclaimed books with Rabbi Gellman for children and
adults. Their book, How Do You Spell God? with a forward
by the Dalai Lama was made into an HBO special that won
the George Foster Peabody Award.
In addition to celebrating Madonna Heights many successes,
the event will also mark the first anniversary of the
agency’s newest program, Grace House. At Grace House,
young families that are ready to leave emergency housing
but need additional help in making the transition to
independent living, find a home.
This year’s ball co-chairs are Thomas and Nancy Dufek. The
Most Rev. Bishop John R. McGann, DD, is honorary ball
chair.
