   Task Force Against Childhood Violence

 
New Hyde Park, New York – A Task Force Against Childhood Violence has been formed by a number of leading service organizations on Long Island. Inspired by the book, Ghosts From the Nursery: Tracing the Roots of Violence by Robin Karr Morse and Meredith S. Wiley, the Task Force will hold a conference at Adelphi University on April 5th.
 
Keynote speaker for the conference will be Robin Karr Morse, a spell-binding speaker and advocate for early detection of children who are at risk to become violent older children. Ms. Karr Morse lectures throughout the country and promotes adoption of positive treatment models employed in other states that have been successful in helping potentially violent children before they enters kindergarten. 

The Task Force Against Childhood Violence includes representatives from the Coalition Against Domestic Violence, North Shore Guidance, Nassau BOCES, LIU CW Post Psychology Department, Child Protective Services, La Leche League, Long Island United Way, EAC, South Shore Guidance Center, The Mothers Center, Harbor Child Care, Hi Hello Child Care and others. 

The Conference on April 5th will include a presentation by Robin Karr Morse, a panel, including: Child Psychologist Juliet Vogel of North Shore/LIJ Health Systems; Department of Social Services’ Maureen McLouglin, Director of Child Protective Services; Pediatrician Dr. Debbie Ersenio-Jenssen, Schneider’s Children’s Hospital; and Social Worker Sandy Walcoff from North Shore Guidance. Jill Rooney of Harbor Child Care will serve as moderator. 

Following a box lunch, 5 workshops will be offered. One workshop will be an open dialogue between Robin Karr Morse and community leaders, county and state government representatives, religious organizations law enforcement agencies and others to examine what can be done to raise public consciousness, raise necessary funds and change legislation. Running concurrently will be workshops: Domestic Violence, presented by Joan Scully of the Coalition Against Domestic Violence; Working with Substance Abuse & Families, presented by Mary Lou Jones of South Shore Guidance Center; Effective Communication/Bonding between Parent & Child, presented by Sara J. Corwin & Mary Castagliola of Nassau BOCES’ Mother/Child/Home Program; and Rethinking Anger Management, presented by Dr. Eva Feindler, of Long Island University CW Post.
