| “Moving
Women Into the Trades,” conference was held on May 12
for women who want to enter non–traditional employment
to earn significantly more money than they can in female dominated
occupations. Lillian McCormick, Director of Women on the Job
commented “Women on average earn less than 77% of what
men earn. They have to work more than 6 days to earn what
men do in 5.”
At the forum, the women learned about apprenticeship programs,
requirements, and applications, and received guidance and
support on the hurdles they would face. As Lillian McCormick
explained, “May is a particularly important time for
this meeting since apprenticeship programs recruit during
June and July. Women on the Job anticipates making this forum
an annual event.
Among the trades represented were Heavy and Highway Construction
Craft Laborers, Skilled Laborers, the Electrical Industry,
Carpenters, and Construction Training Centers of New York
State.
The forum was conducted in cooperation with Hempsteadworks
Workforce Investment System, The New York State Department
of Labor and Nassau Community College Career Counseling Center.
